Laying the Foundation: Empowering the Next Generation of Women in Property

In the world of property, whether it’s construction, development, or property management, the landscape has historically been dominated by men. Yet, as I reflect on my own journey and the countless incredible women I have had the privilege to work alongside, I see a future that’s not just open for women but one where women lead, inspire, and innovate.

The property industry is changing, and we are at the forefront of shaping it. This is the moment to empower the next generation of women to step into their full potential and revolutionize the way we think about space, community, and growth.

When I started my career, there were very few women in leadership roles in construction and project management. The lack of visible role models can make you question your place in the industry.

But I quickly realized something crucial: if you don’t see the representation you need, you must become it! Young women entering the property industry today have more examples of female leadership, but we still have work to do. It’s vital for seasoned professionals, both women and men, to elevate the visibility of women in all areas of the property industry. When women see themselves reflected in powerful roles—whether as CEOs, project directors, architects, engineers, or developers—they gain the confidence to envision themselves succeeding at the highest levels.

Traditionally, leadership in the property industry has been defined by a certain set of characteristics—aggressiveness, assertiveness, and a focus on profit above all else. However, leadership and values are evolving, and we are seeing a shift toward a more inclusive and holistic approach.

Today’s leaders understand that long-term success requires empathy, collaboration, and a deep understanding of the communities we serve. As women, we have an opportunity to lead differently. We can bring a fresh perspective to the table—one that prioritizes not only financial gain but also sustainability, inclusivity, and social impact.

We are redefining leadership in ways that go beyond the traditional models, and this is our greatest strength. The property industry is about building spaces, yes—but more importantly, it’s about building connections, fostering communities, and creating a sense of belonging.

Women are uniquely positioned to excel in these areas, and we must embrace this as our advantage. Leadership isn’t about conforming to the status quo; it’s about setting a new standard, one that aligns with the values of a rapidly changing world.

In my experience, success doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s born from collaboration, support, and community. For women in the property industry, building strong networks is crucial. We need to be advocates not only for ourselves but for each other.

When one woman succeeds, we all succeed. Find your allies, mentors, and champions—both male and female. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, inspire you, and believe in your potential. Mentorship has played a transformative role in my career, and I encourage you to seek out those relationships early on. Equally important, be a mentor when you can. As we rise, we must lift others with us.

The property industry is evolving, and it is women who will be at the helm of that transformation. We are seeing shifts toward sustainable construction, smart cities, and community-centered development—areas where empathy, collaboration, and a forward-thinking mindset are essential. These are qualities women bring naturally to the table, and they will be vital to the success of the industry in the years to come.

To the young women starting out: you are entering an industry on the cusp of a new era. The challenges you face will make you stronger, and the opportunities ahead are boundless. This is the time to innovate, to challenge the status quo, and to bring fresh perspectives that shape a better, more equitable world through the spaces we build.

This industry is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about creating environments where people live, work, and thrive. As women, we have the power to redefine what success looks like in this space. And in doing so, we create a legacy—not only for ourselves but for the generations of women who will follow.

So, if you’re thinking about starting a career in this industry, or if you’re already on that path but doubting whether you belong, let me tell you this: you do. Your potential is limitless. Embrace the challenges. And know that you are building the future, one project, one idea, and one bold decision at a time.
